About us

1.         Who do you give grants to?

Ordained Anglican clergy and their dependants. See our Grants Section for more information concerning eligibility.

2.         What is the difference between the Sons and the Friends of the Clergy?

Although we are two separate charities, we are now administered together with a common trustee body and a common staff and we operate very much as one single organisation.

3.         Does it matter to which charity I should apply for a grant?

No. We have a joint application form and all applications are automatically considered by both charities. For technical reasons, when awarding grants they come from one charity or the other, but applicants do not need to concern themselves with this.

4.         Where does your income come from?

All our income comes from voluntary sources. We need over £2 million each year just to maintain our current level of grant-making.

5.         Why do the charities need donations?

Much of our income derives from the two charities’ investment portfolios that have been built up through the generosity of previous generations of supporters. However, that income is not sufficient on its own to sustain our current level of grant work, let alone to develop that work in order to meet the changing needs of the clergy in the 21st century church.

To help clergy and their families properly today, we need the generosity of the present generation whom those clergy serve, rather than being forced to rely solely on the generosity of generations gone by.

6.         Do you have copies of your annual reports and accounts available to download from the site?

Yes - go to Annual Report and you can download pdf versions. Alternatively, please email us and we’ll be happy to send you a hard copy.
